sports selections

The Atlanta Braves have been pretty dismal so far this season, but the good sports news is coming out of our ancestral land: with Arsenal's 1-0 defeat of Manchester United today, Chelsea sits a mere three points behind United in the Barclays Premier League. What's more, the two teams go head-to-head in a week, giving Chelsea the opportunity to take the league lead with two games left.

Some may wonder where my affection for Chelsea originated. I was forced to confront the question recently, and my recollection is that my allegiance was born from a FIFA game. With Manchester United the "go-to" 5-star team, I chose Chelsea as a formidable underdog. Of course that was before I knew about their Russian billionaire ownership, or how they buy all of their talented players rather than fostering and bringing up their own. But now, with Manchester City even more guilty of that mentality, and with the acquisitions of Fernando Torres and David Luiz, Chelsea is still a veritable All-Star team and their financial stigma is less acute. There's still the issue of their off-pitch indiscretions, but I made Chelsea my team when they were still finishing third in the league and I'll reap the benefits this year when they repeat as champions.

In other sporting news, basketball is almost over (until the next 2-year-long season begins), and football seems to have finally realized that it sucks.

No trackbacks yet.
